Tobias Bernstrup’s videos draw the viewer into both generic and real urban landscapes. Although different with each piece, all these landscapes conjure up the same solitude.

Tobias Bernstrup, XSeed 4000, 2004

For the animated video “XSEED 4000” the environment created by the artist is inspired by a building that would be the tallest construction in the world. Designed for the bay of Tokyo, it is supposed to rise to 4000 meters, include 800 floors and shelter one million inhabitants. Visitor-players can walk around this utopian environment where surveillance, rule and perfection are found side by side - but before long they are overwhelmed by a feeling of paranoia.
